Nuix Neo Legal: Unleashing AI Across the EDRM
Intro to Nuix Neo Legal
Nuix, the company behind one of the industry’s leading data processing engines, released their newest platform called Nuix Neo Legal. The simplest way to describe it is that Nuix Neo Legal is an AI workflow from automatic ingestion through to review. It’s the entire EDRM model with AI at its core and it incorporates both Nuix Workstation and Nuix Discover.
Nuix Neo Legal is a one-stop shop for end-to-end data processing and review.
Preservation
Nuix Neo Legal supports preservation and legal hold processes. Legal teams can manage legal hold questionnaires and custodians can upload documents directly into the platform to organise and preserve data throughout the legal process.
Collections
Nuix Neo Legal can collect vast amounts of data from over 1,000 different data types using its Nuix Connectors, including Slack and Microsoft 365. It can even collect data from GenAI tools like Copilot to help understand how someone used Copilot and assess its impact on your case.
Nuix has also introduced a connector for Microsoft Purview so that data collections for Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams can be conducted directly through Nuix instead of Microsoft. This eliminates the need to transfer data between platforms and results in more efficient outcomes.
Processing
After collection, the data is processed within Workstation and Nuix Neo Legal enriches the data with AI using Natural Language Processing (NLP). Nuix can ingest and process hidden data or slack spaces (i.e. deleted files) within hard disk drives. The processing engine is trusted by organisations like the FBI and police forces.
Typically, we collect vast amounts of unstructured data and it’s difficult to make sense of it. That’s where Nuix Neo Legal comes into play. Nuix Neo Legal uses AI to analyse the processed data in Nuix Workstation and cull the data before it is promoted to review. Nuix state there is a huge potential impact on hosting by using AI to filter out irrelevant information upfront and reduce the data up to x10 (ten times).
Specifically, Nuix Neo Legal uses cognitive AI (i.e. extracting actual facts rather than GenAI which is creating content). This feature includes NLP classification to categorise documents based on keywords, themes or topics and legal teams can identify potentially relevant documents that need to be published to review.
The platform contains automated workflows and data ingestions can take place 24/7 without interrupting the review. Processing reports can also be generated to highlight the effectiveness of the processing and culling phases.
Case teams can connect to Power BI as well so they can track all the moving parts of the EDRM as this has been quite tricky to do previously as companies use many different software packages for each stage. This would enable better efficiencies for legal teams and greater profits while providing a better service for the client.
The following image demonstrates how Power BI has been utilised to highlight key metrics related to the data processing work completed on a project.
Review and Analysis
During this stage, AI can be used in the following areas in Nuix Discover:
Code-free AI model creation for categorisation, classification and extraction as described further below. The AI models can be built by anyone without programming skills and can be designed for different subject matters.
Content Categorisation which can organise documents into more than 350 topics, such as “Sports” or “Technology”. This helps to identify the subject matter of the documents and legal teams can find the most relevant documents efficiently.
Document-level Classification which groups documents into more than 200 document types, e.g. meeting minutes or bank statements, to improve data analysis and culling. After selecting the topic(s) from your content categorisation, you can delve deeper to identify specific document types like financial reports or meeting agendas.
Context-Aware Extractions which are thousands of entities within a document, e.g. date of birth or credit card numbers. This goes beyond document-level classification and allows you to pinpoint specific text within a document for a number of reasons, such as identifying personal data that need to be redacted within a document.
Cognitive AI features for semantic searching which allows users to search conceptually rather than exact keywords (e.g. "Find me documents relating to disputes on the contract").
Communication network analysis to identify and track communication patterns among individuals.
Image recognition that enables image search capabilities and identifies specific content (e.g. "Find pictures of a red bus").
AI-powered sampling that improves the accuracy and representativeness of your sample set by selecting unbiased data for review. By analysing the data graphically, this method is more comprehensive than standard sampling and ensures that the sample covers all relevant aspects of the data. This leads to better model performance and more reliable results.
Key document summarisation which helps legal teams focus on the most relevant information in a document.
Name normalisation to identify and unify references to the same individuals across different documents.
Machine translation to facilitate the review of multilingual data.
Audio transcription to convert audio files into text and make audio files searchable and easier to review.
In addition, Nuix Neo Legal includes preconfigured workflows and templates designed to simplify repetitive tasks; customisable dashboards that allow users to visualise their data in review and make it easier to track review progress; and native excel redaction to redact excel files natively within the platform.
Conclusion
Nuix Neo Legal is a powerful and versatile platform that provides all the tools you need for the entire EDRM process. Its AI features make it an invaluable tool for eDisclosure practitioners and the automated workflows speed up tasks that would normally require a lot of manual effort. This significantly reduces the time required to analyse large datasets and means that legal teams can focus on more important tasks at hand rather than managing their data.
Nuix provides over 500 pre-built AI models available out-of-the-box, with the option for users to bring and integrate their own models. We look forward to seeing how these models will evolve and be developed by subject matter experts, as well as the unlimited possibilities this opens up for the future of eDisclosure.
